The weather around Taiwan will be largely sunny and warm on Tuesday, with intermittent afternoon thunderstorms likely around coastal areas in southeastern Taiwan, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are forecast for the Greater Taipei area, northeastern Taiwan, and mountainous parts of the island, it predicted.
Daytime highs could reach 34 degrees Celsius in Taiwan’s western half and 36 degrees at around noon in areas near mountains or river valleys in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, while highs of 30-31 degrees are forecast for eastern Taiwan, the bureau said.
Temperatures could drop to 23-25 degrees on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, according to the bureau.
The CWB warned that thick fog or low cloud cover could affect visibility in western Taiwan and the Kinmen and Matsu islands early in the morning and late at night.
Wu Der-rong (???), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said daytime highs in Taiwan could drop by 1-2 degrees Wednesday, with occasional showers or thunderstorms in some areas of Taiwan.
Less moisture in the air is expected Thursday, leading to mostly sunny skies and temperatures 1-2 degrees higher than on Wednesday, with only brief showers in some mountainous areas in the afternoon, Wu said.
Over the weekend, daytime highs are likely to fall by 2-3 degrees, and occasional showers or thunderstorms can be expected.
On May 1 and May 2, the possible convergence of a weather front, northeasterly winds and a tropical disturbance or a tropical depression in the South China Sea might bring rainy and cool weather to Taiwan, though more observation is needed, Wu said.
