Two back-to-back cold weather fronts are forecast to hit Taiwan next week, with low-lying areas in the north likely to see temperatures dip to as low as 13 degrees Celsius, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said on Friday.

An approaching front and the strengthening of a northeasterly wind system are forecast to impact northern areas from Nov. 30, sending temperatures lower, the CWB said.

According to the bureau, brief showers can also be expected in some northern and eastern areas during the day, while temperatures in areas north of Taichung could dip to as low as 13 degrees during the early morning from Dec. 1-2.

The cold air system is expected to weaken on Dec. 3, before the arrival of another stronger front nearing the level of a continental cold air mass the following day, the CWB added.

Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said low-lying areas in northern Taiwan are likely to see temperatures drop to as low as 10-11 degrees in the early morning of Dec. 2.

Although the first cold air system will quickly weaken, Wu said, the next cold front is forecast to arrive late on Dec. 3 and is expected to be stronger in intensity, sending temperatures even lower across Taiwan from Dec. 4-5.

However, this cold weather system will need to be observed as there remain many uncertainties, he explained.
