Nauruan President Russ Joseph Kun will make a six-day state visit to Taiwan from Nov. 14 to 19, during which he will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced Thursday.

Kun will head a 20-member delegation of cabinet ministers and other officials, including the country’s justice minister, foreign minister, and deputy interior minister, MOFA spokeswoman Joanne Ou (歐江安) said.

To welcome Kun and his delegation, President Tsai will hold a military salute, and both sides will exchange views on bilateral cooperation projects and topics of mutual interest in the Presidential Office, MOFA said in a press release.

Kun will also meet with Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), MOFA added.

The trip will be Kun’s first visit to Taiwan since assuming his country’s presidency.

Kun was sworn in on Sept. 29, days after he was nominated unopposed by Nauru’s 24th parliament on Sept. 24.

The Republic of China, the de jure name for Taiwan, first established diplomatic relations with Nauru in 1980.

Ties were broken off in 2002 when Nauru switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

In May 2005, the ROC and Nauru re-established diplomatic relations and opened embassies in each other’s capitals. The People’s Republic of China consequently severed its relations with Nauru.
