Taiwan on Wednesday reported 16,484 new cases of COVID-19 and 64 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The new cases represented a 17.2-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but four of them had underlying health conditions, while 40 had not received at least three COVID-19 vaccine shots, the CECC said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 138 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 66 as severe.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Regional breakdown<\/p>\n
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,168, followed by Taoyuan with 1,962 and Kaohsiung with 1,916.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Taichung reported 1,770 cases, Taipei 1,432, Tainan 1,395, Changhua 712, Hsinchu County 513, Pingtung 456, Hsinchu City 403, Miaoli 379, Yunlin 365 and Yilan 356.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Keelung had 311 cases, Nantou 235, Chiayi County 233, Hualien 207, Chiayi City 142, Taitung 119, Kinmen 34, Penghu 34, and the Matsu Islands three, the CECC said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,970,937 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
With the 64 deaths reported Wednesday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,672.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
