10-Year Sentence for Thai National in Miaoli Killing Upheld by Supreme Court

Miaoli: The Supreme Court has upheld the jail sentence of 10 years and six months given to a Thai national found guilty of killing his compatriot nearly two years ago in Miaoli County.

According to Focus Taiwan, a recent court document stated that the verdict against Ladta Aphisit, a former employee of a construction firm in Miaoli’s Tongluo Township, is final and cannot be appealed.

The incident occurred on December 8, 2023, when the victim, Kamsookdee Wichin, reprimanded Ladta Aphisit for talking too loudly on the phone in their shared migrant worker dormitory, the court explained. In response, Ladta Aphisit stabbed Kamsookdee Wichin 11 times in various body parts with a fruit knife.

Kamsookdee Wichin succumbed to multiple organ failure, which resulted in septic shock. After the stabbing, Ladta Aphisit surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime, the court noted.

In August 2024, the Miaoli District Court initially sentenced Ladta Aphisit to nine years and 10 months in prison for the killing. However, the verdict was overturned by the Taiwan High Court branch in Taichung, which deemed the original sentence too lenient and increased it to 10 years and six months.

Another appeal was filed, but the Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s ruling, finding no errors in its judgment.
