Taipei Transport Exhibit Opens at Former Air Force HQ

Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening ceremony of the ‘Friendly Tour in Taipei’ Exhibition at the former Air Force Command Headquarters on July 5. He noted that the exhibition will allow visitors to learn more about the history and development of the city’s transportation systems.

To the surprise of the audience, the mayor arrived at the scene on a 25-year-old Sunny-model taxi. Hau noted that the ride was reminiscent of his childhood when he first took a cab by himself. That was an era during which rickshaws were gradually being replaced by taxis, a then-luxurious choice of transport.According to Hau, Taipei has seen an evolution of transportation over the course of time from steam trains, rickshaws, taxis, public buses, MRT network, to YouBike. With the completion of MRT Songshan Line by the end of this year, the city will be further connected to other parts of Taiwan through a more comprehensive transit web linking railways and high speed rail across the island. Hau reckoned that the city will endeavor to promote the use of green vehicles which comprise the MRT, the public bus system (including a fleet of 2,000 low-base buses), the YouBikes, and walking. This approach will no doubt bolster the city’s status as a convenient international metropolis.
