Taipei, Matsue Ink MOU on Cooperation

Mayor Hau Lung-bin signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Matsue City Mayor, Masataka Matsuura, to enhance bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas on July 25.

Hau pointed out that the relationship between the two cities dates back to 2007, when Jianguo Flower Market held an exhibition featuring peonies from the Japanese city. Matsue was also the first foreign city to sign up for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo.In addition, Matsue has presented peony exhibitions at Taipei City Hall for three consecutive years following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami as a way of expressing gratitude to the people on the island who made generous donations for the relief work in Japan. The two sides expanded ties from floral exchanges to tourism in 2013, when Matsue participated in the Beitou Hot Spring Festival for the first time. Currently delicately made wagashi artworks from the Japanese city are on display at the City Hall.Hau stressed that with the MOU, Taipei and Matsue will see broader cooperation spanning flower exhibitions, tourism, economy, culture, and education. Comparing bilateral relationship to blooming peonies, he hopes the two cities will not only develop closer ties on the government level but also in the private sector.
