City Orders Thorough Safety Check for Gas Pipelines

In light of the gas blasts that shook Kaohsiung last week, the Department of Economic Development (DOED) is ordering the city’s four natural gas suppliers to conduct a comprehensive check up on local pipeline networks.

The four gas companies are Great Taipei Gas Corporation, Yang Ming Shan Gas Company, Shin Hu Natural Gas Company, and Shin Shin Natural Gas Company.Gas facilities of the four corporations span 10 gas storage tanks, 64 compression stations, and a 315km-long network comprising both high and mid pressure pipelines. As of August 3, conducted checks indicated no irregularities. The examinations will be completed by August 8. According to DOED, the City has installed gas blocks as a precautionary measure. During emergencies, these devices will automatically shut off the gas supply as preventative measures. DOED requested gas suppliers to continue its operations in detecting gas leaks, conducting maintenance on pipelines and other equipment, and replacing outdated pipes. The agency stressed that any breach of regulations will lead to severe punishment and violators will be called to account. A task force comprising gas experts and officials from the Fire Department, Public Works Department, and Labor Inspection Office, has also been established to survey Taipei’s public gas storage and distribution infrastructure.
