Taipei, New Taipei Set out Vision for ‘Golden Twin Cities’

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu jointly presided over the 3rd committee meeting for the initiative of Greater Taipei Golden Twin Cities on August 6.

Hau recalled that he and his New Taipei counterpart decided to launch the initiative three years ago, acknowledging the close relationship between the two metropolises—whether in areas such as commuting, businesses, or recreational activities. As of today, the alliance has given birth to 57 collaboration projects.

Citing the revitalization of the Tamsui River, Hau noted that the project’s success has greatly boosted the number of visitors to the city’s riverside parks—which boasts a total area equivalent to 20-odd Daan Forest Parks. Were it not for the support of New Taipei City, the water quality of the river could not have been effectively improved.

A recent example of close partnership between the two municipalities was the police presence at MRT stations in response to the MRT indiscriminate killing incident in May. Hau said that the two mayors ordered heightened police presence at all MRT stations under the respective jurisdictions to assuage fear. The decision was reached after intense phone conversation between the two following the crisis.

Hau reckoned that Taipei and New Taipei must move forward on the same track as they rely on each other. He expressed his gratitude to his counterpart and the administration team from New Taipei; he also looks forward to future collaboration opportunities, which will build on what has already been achieved.
