Topping out Ceremony Held for Digital Art Center

Mayor Hau Lung-bin placed the last beam on top of the Digital Art Center (DAC) building in the beam installation ceremony on August 27. With its proximity to Shilin Night Market, he envisions the venue becoming not only a new cultural highlight, but also a tourist magnet for Taipei.

According to Hau, the art facility is the collaboration between the city government, Architect Rem Koolhaas of O.M.A., and Architect Kris Yao of ARTECH. An architectural landmark, the center will serve as a multi-functional theater for a variety of performances ranging from concerts to local plays to musicals.

Hau reckoned that the cultural and creative industries are playing an increasingly vital role in boosting Taipei’s soft power and competitiveness. In light of this, the City has been investing in cultural infrastructure over the past eight years. Major construction projects in the works include the Digital Art Center, the Pop Music Center, the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and the Taipei City Museum. Taipei has also secured the right to host 2016 World Design Capital.Hau noted that the efforts to build a solid foundation to foster cultural development are made in hopes that more talented people will be drawn to the city, thereby creating momentum for the birth of a lively cultural scene and strengthening the status of Taipei as a cultural capital.
