Taipei: Fubon Guardians left-hander Chen Shih-peng, aiming to regain his past all-star form, delivered a rare "Maddux" on Thursday, leading his team to a 6-0 win over the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions. According to Focus Taiwan, Chen required only 94 pitches to achieve his fourth career complete-game shutout, allowing six hits, striking out two, and not issuing any walks or hitting a batter. This marked Chen's first "Maddux," a term for a nine-inning complete-game shutout with fewer than 100 pitches, named after Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux, who accomplished this feat 13 times in his 23-year career. Previously, Chen's complete-game shutouts required at least 118 pitches. This was the second Maddux in the current season of Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), following TSG Hawks right-hander Huang Tzu-peng's 93-pitch shutout on June 13. The league last witnessed two Maddux shutouts in one regular season in 2015. The performance not only set a personal milestone for Chen but also provided a necessary boost following subpar performances earlier this season. Earlier in May, Chen struggled in two starts with the Guardians, conceding 10 runs over six innings, leading to a temporary move to the club's farm team for adjustments. In his return, the 28-year-old adeptly managed six hits over the first six innings by inducing four double plays and went on to retire six consecutive batters in the seventh and eighth innings. Despite an error by third baseman Wang Nian-hao in the ninth, Chen retired the next three hitters to complete the shutout. The Guardians supported Chen with an early lead, as Tung Tzu-en drove in two runs with a first-inning double, followed by three runs in the third and a solo homer by Yu Chang in the fifth, marking Chang's league-leading 12th homer of the season. The Guardians concluded the first half of the CPBL season with a 34-26 record, trailing five games behind the Wei Chuan Dragons. They are currently tied for last in the second half with a 4-6 record, two games behind th e league-leading Rakuten Monkeys and TSG Hawks.
