Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Xing Haiming said Thursday he has made significant efforts to improve bilateral relations. Xing made the remarks to reporters as he left the foreign ministry building in Seoul, where he had paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul. When asked repeatedly about his accomplishments, Xing said, "I have worked hard to develop the relationship between our two countries." Xing began his tenure as China's top envoy to Seoul in January 2020. He is recognized for his extensive knowledge and experience in Korea-related affairs, including his fluency in Korean. The Chinese government had reportedly instructed Xing to return home. Xing is anticipated to leave his position in mid-July. "I am grateful for the support I received from the South Korean government and various sectors of society," he said, adding that he will work to enhance China-South Korea relations upon returning home. As an expert in diplomatic relations involving the Korean Peninsula for approxim ately 20 years, Xing has developed a wide network in South Korea, raising high expectations for his role. However, his public appearances have been limited since a conversation last year with Lee Jae-myung, leader of South Korea's main opposition party, drew significant criticism. In the meeting with Lee, Xing warned that South Korea will "definitely regret it" if it "bets on China's loss" in the strategic rivalry with the United States.
