Chinese Military Exercises Signal Strategic Messages to Taiwan, Japan, and U.S.

Beijing: The military exercises launched by China on Monday serve multiple strategic purposes, including cognitive warfare against Taiwan, countering United States-Japan military cooperation, and demonstrating coordination with Russia.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lin Ying-yu, an associate professor at Tamkang University's Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, stated that the drills were not merely a reaction to the recent U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. Instead, they are also aimed at addressing Japan's increasing military collaboration with the United States and the hardline statements made by Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, regarding a "Taiwan contingency."

In November, Prime Minister Takaichi remarked that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan's survival and potentially justify a military response from Tokyo. This statement elicited a strong reaction from Beijing, further straining relations.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched the exercises, named Justice Mission 2025, around Taiwan. The PLA described these exercises as a "stern warning to 'Taiwan Independence' separatist forces," highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region.
