Cold air front lightly cools northern Taiwan

A mild cold air front has reached Taiwan, effecting only the northern parts of the country, gently cooling the area while the rest of the island experienced warm weather on Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said that seasonal northeasterly winds gained strength earlier Sunday to lightly cool northern Taiwan as well as Hualien and Yilan counties in the east, bringing temperatures to 19-21 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in the central parts of the country and Taitung, meanwhile, will range between 24 and 25 degrees, with the mercury in the southern parts of Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula expected to rise to 26 degrees.

However, the CWB added that evening temperatures throughout the country will cool down once again, and is forecasted to range between 14 and 18 degrees in areas north of Taichung.

Areas around Taichung will see temperatures around 15-20 degrees in the evening, while the southern and eastern parts of the country will experience temperatures at 16-19 degrees.

The CWB advised people in areas with obvious morning and evening temperature fluctuations to dress warmly.

According to CWB data, the coldest temperature on Sunday in low-lying areas of Taiwan was recorded in Miaoli County’s Touwu Township at 9.8 degrees, to which Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said was due to the effects of radiative cooling.

Wu said that the weather on Feb. 28 and March 1 will be relatively stable, although differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures will be clearly felt.

In addition, radiation fog could occur in northwestern parts of the county sporadically throughout March 1, he added.

The meteorologist also said that starting March 2, the northeasterly wind system will increase in strength, but cold air will remain weak, which will bring light rain and slightly cooler weather to the country.

The mercury will climb again between March 3 and 4, with the weakening of the seasonal wind, but it will dip once more on March 5 after the arrival of another northeasterly wind system, Wu added.

However, the accompanying cold air has not yet reached a strong enough level for it to be declared a cold air mass, Wu said.
