Cold Air Mass Causes Significant Temperature Drop in Northern Taiwan

Taipei: Temperatures in northern Taiwan dropped by around 8 degrees Celsius on Sunday compared to the day before as a cold air mass arrived, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The CWA reported that highs in the northern parts of Taiwan and Yilan County ranged between 18 to 20 degrees, marking a significant drop from Saturday’s temperatures.

According to Focus Taiwan, the cooler temperatures were attributed to the arrival of a cold air mass from the north. The CWA warned that Taiwan would experience considerable day-night temperature variations on Sunday. In contrast, areas such as central and southern Taiwan, along with Hualien and Taitung counties, will maintain relatively warmer temperatures ranging from 21 to 26 degrees.

Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong cautioned about progressively cooler temperatures later in the day and into the night. He noted that the day-night temperature differences are expected to persist through Monday and Tuesday. Wu also mentioned that by Monday, the cold air mass might intensify to the level of a continental cold air mass, potentially causing temperatures in some low-lying areas to fall below 10 degrees.

Wu further indicated that temperatures are anticipated to rise after the cold air mass weakens between Wednesday and Thursday. However, another cold air mass is expected to reach Taiwan by Friday, according to the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model.
