Cold weather advisory issued for most of Taiwan

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a cold weather advisory on Thursday morning, warning of daytime temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius in most parts of Taiwan.

Under the influence of a cold snap, temperatures will remain low the whole day, while the mercury could sink into single digits in areas outside of Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung, according to the CWB.

The lowest temperature recorded Thursday in low-lying areas of the country by the CWB was 6.5 degrees in Daxi District, Taoyuan, followed by 6.7 degrees in Shulin District, New Taipei, and 7.6 degrees in Taipei’s Beitou District.

The CWB reminded those using gas or electric heaters to keep indoor spaces properly ventilated.

Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (???) said the cold weather could linger until the morning of Dec. 26.

From Dec. 23-26, temperatures could sink below five degrees after sunset because of radiative cooling, despite sunny and stable daytime conditions, Wu said, adding that agriculture and aquaculture workers should take appropriate precautions.

Meanwhile, the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station warned local farmers of the arrival of a continental cold air mass from Friday to Sunday, with nighttime temperatures forecast to dip to between 13 and 14 degrees.
