Cool, wet weather to continue into Friday in northern Taiwan

Cool and wet weather is set to linger into Friday in northern parts of Taiwan due to seasonal northeasterly winds, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday.

Thursday will bring highs of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius and lows of 16 to 19 degrees in northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan, including Yilan and Hualien, according to the CWB.

Central and southern Taiwan, meanwhile, will see highs of 26 to 30 degrees and lows of 19 to 20 degrees, the CWB added.

The lowest temperature recorded Thursday in low-lying areas in Taiwan was 15.2 degrees in Keelung’s Cidu at 7:30 a.m., according to data posted on the CWB website.

On Thursday morning, seasonal northeasterly winds brought heavy rainfall to Keelung and northern coastal areas, according to the CWB, which issued a heavy rain alert for these locations as well as Yilan , New Taipei and the mountainous areas of Taipei.

The wet and cool weather is forecast to continue through Thursday night in northern Taiwan, while central and southern Taiwan can expect dry conditions with cool temperatures in the early morning and at night.

On Friday, localized showers are expected in the north and east alongside a slight temperature rise, as the weather in northern Taiwan remains cool and wet, according to Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

On Saturday, cloudy and sunny skies will prevail throughout Taiwan, with temperatures expected to rebound significantly, Wu said.

However, another wave of northeasterly winds is forecast to hit Taiwan Sunday, bringing occasional showers to northern coastal areas and northeastern Taiwan and pushing the temperatures lower, Wu added.
