CORONAVIRUS/President in isolation after COVID exposure, in good health: official

President Tsai Ing-wen (???) is in good health and working remotely from home, as she follows Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) guidance to isolate until April 14 after a person she recently lunched with tested positive for COVID-19, her spokesperson said Saturday.

Tsai took a rapid antigen and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for the virus Friday, with both results negative, Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang (???) said.

According to Chang, one of Tsai’s relatives with whom she had lunch at the presidential residence on April 4 felt unwell Friday and was later confirmed to have contracted the virus, leading to Tsai’s home isolation in line with CECC guidance.

The family gathering was held with partitions used to separate participants and there was a distance of 3 meters between Tsai and the infected relative, he said.

CECC guidance requires close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases to undergo home isolation for 10 days after being in contact with the individual concerned, followed by seven-days of self-health management, in an effort to ensure contacts limit their interactions with others.

Tsai has cancelled all public events on her schedule but will continue to work at the residence via video conferencing before the seven-day self-health management period ends, said Chang.

In an update of Tsai’s condition Saturday, Chang said Tsai is in good health and made phone calls with officials from 8 a.m. to keep track of government affairs.

A plan to receive visitors from the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Association and European Parliament at the Presidential Office on Tuesday (April 12) will be rearranged accordingly after Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs discusses possible alternatives with the delegation, Chang said.

According to Chang, Vice President Lai Ching-te (???) and Tsai’s close staff were tested for the virus on Friday and the results all came back negative.
