Taiwan on Sunday reported 13,311 new COVID-19 infections, all but 35 of which were locally transmitted, and 25 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s, and they all had underlying health issues, while 10 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 98 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 29 as severe.

The 13,311 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday represented an 18 percent drop from a week earlier, according to the CECC.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei had the highest number of new infections, with 2,064, followed by Taichung with 1,729. and Kaohsiung with 1,708.

Taoyuan reported 1,463 cases, Taipei 1,203, Tainan 1,176, Changhua 776, Pingtung 401, Hsinchu County 397, Hsinchu City 394, Yunlin 361, and Miaoli 296.

Chiayi County had 239 cases, Yilan 233, Nantou 219, Keelung 179, Hualien 139, Chiayi 133, Taitung 100, Kinmen 44, Penghu 21, and the Matsu Islands one, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,267,720 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,538 classified as imported.

With the 25 deaths reported Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,235.
