Taiwan on Wednesday reported 16,484 new cases of COVID-19 and 64 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 17.2-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but four of them had underlying health conditions, while 40 had not received at least three COVID-19 vaccine shots, the CECC said.

Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 138 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 66 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,168, followed by Taoyuan with 1,962 and Kaohsiung with 1,916.

Taichung reported 1,770 cases, Taipei 1,432, Tainan 1,395, Changhua 712, Hsinchu County 513, Pingtung 456, Hsinchu City 403, Miaoli 379, Yunlin 365 and Yilan 356.

Keelung had 311 cases, Nantou 235, Chiayi County 233, Hualien 207, Chiayi City 142, Taitung 119, Kinmen 34, Penghu 34, and the Matsu Islands three, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,970,937 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020.

With the 64 deaths reported Wednesday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,672.
