Taiwan recorded 16,584 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, all but 232 of which were domestic infections, and 36 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 60s to their 90s. All suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 14 were unvaccinated, the CECC said.

Severe, moderate cases

Also on Monday, the CECC said that 31 previously reported cases had become severe, while eight other individuals had developed moderate symptoms. The total of 39 new moderate and severe cases was the lowest daily number since May 3, the CECC said.

Of the 4,553,474 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,426 have been classified as severe infections and 11,635 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 31.

In all other cases, the infected persons were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

In terms of the regional breakdown, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Monday, with 2,831, followed by Taichung with 1,987 and Taoyuan with 1,840.

Kaohsiung reported 1,622 cases, Taipei 1,574, Tainan 1,313, Changhua County 740, Miaoli County 539, Hsinchu County 500, Pingtung County 442, Yunlin County 427, Hsinchu City 396, Yilan County 358, Nantou County 322, Chiayi County 320, Hualien County 294, and Keelung 236.

Chiayi City had 216 cases, Taitung County 182, Penghu County 112, Kinmen County 91, and the Matsu Islands 10, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,604,761 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,584,424 domestic infections.

With the 36 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 8,963.
