CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 16,747 new COVID-19 cases, 61 deaths

Taiwan reported 16,747 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and 61 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 16,477 domestic cases represented a nearly 19.9-percent decline from the previous week, according to CECC data.

The CECC said the deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but three of them had underlying health conditions, while 28 of them had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 158 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 52 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,117, followed by Taoyuan with 2,059 and Kaohsiung with 1,987.

Taichung reported 1,910 cases, Taipei 1,440, Tainan 1,421, Changhua 794, Hsinchu County 476, Pingtung 427, Hsinchu City 387, Yunlin 384, Yilan 366, Miaoli 337, and Keelung 303.

Nantou had 269 cases, Chiayi County 249, Hualien 204, Chiayi City 136, Taitung 113, Kinmen 49, Penghu 36, and the Matsu Islands 13.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,878,848 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 52,902 classified as imported.

With the 61 deaths reported Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,319.
