Taiwan on Tuesday reported 17,289 new COVID-19 infections and 21 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 5-percent drop from a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but one had underlying health conditions, while 10 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 17 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 12 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases, with 2,582, followed by Taichung with 2,360 and Kaohsiung with 2,128.

Taoyuan recorded 1,641 cases, Tainan 1,544, Taipei 1,523, Changhua 1,035, Pingtung 579, Hsinchu County 567, Miaoli 489, Yunlin 485 and Hsinchu City 418.

Nantou had 362 cases, Chiayi County 351, Yilan 280, Hualien 241, Chiayi City 195, Keelung 178, Taitung 144, Kinmen 84, Penghu 49 and the Matsu Islands five, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,295,652 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,656 classified as imported.

With the 21 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,297.
