Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 20,412 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and 47 deaths from the disease.

The total number of cases represented a 16.5-percent decline from the same day a week earlier, the CECC said.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but three had underlying health issues, while 22 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The youngest person who is confirmed to have died from the disease was a man in his 40s who had gotten three COVID-19 vaccine jabs but had multiple chronic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, CECC spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang (???) said.

His cause of death was COVID-19 combined with cardiopulmonary failure, Chuang added.

Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 94 new cases classified as moderate and 48 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 4,306, followed by Taichung with 2,448 and Kaohsiung with 2,229.

Taoyuan reported 2,223 new cases, Taipei 2,222, Tainan 1,609, Changhua 851, Hsinchu County 611, Hsinchu City 513, Miaoli 496, Pingtung 451 and Keelung 367.

Yunlin had 364 cases, Chiayi County 310, Nantou 309, Yilan 306, Chiayi City 169, Hualien 143, Kinmen 90, Taitung 88 and Penghu 44, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,188,207 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 44,790 classified as imported.

With the 47 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in Taiwan rose to 15,802.
