Taiwan reported 23,118 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, all but 73 of which were domestic infections, and 69 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The patients whose deaths were reported Monday ranged in age from one year old to over 90.

Sixty-four of them had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and among the other five, three were unvaccinated, one had received two COVID-19 vaccine shots, and one had received three vaccine shots, the CECC said.

In total, 33 of the deceased patients were unvaccinated, according to the CECC.

The 1-year-old had passed away due to encephalitis, bringing the number of children under 13 who have died of COVID-19 in Taiwan to 21.

The CECC also said that 68 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 99 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Among the severe cases are two children, one who has been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and the other with pneumonia, the CECC said.

Of the 3,840,958 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 7,190 have been classified as severe infections and 9,512 as moderate, accounting for 0.19 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 3.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

The domestic cases tally of 23,045 reported Monday was the lowest daily total in two months.

New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases Monday, with 3,438, followed by Taichung with 3,217, and Kaohsiung with 2,719.

Taoyuan recorded 2,411 cases, Taipei 1,992, Tainan 1,842, Changhua County 1,336, Pingtung County 921, Miaoli County 619, Yunlin County 609, and Hsinchu County 599.

Hsinchu City reported 491, Yilan County 491, Nantou County 472, Chiayi County 439, Hualien County 436, Taitung County 254, Keelung 246, Chiayi City 213, Penghu County 157, Kinmen County 125, and Matsu Islands 18.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 3,893,643 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 3,878,594 domestic infections.

With the 69 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 7,025.
