Taiwan reported 25,296 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, all but 45 of which were domestic infections, and 72 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals whose deaths were reported on Saturday ranged in age from their 40s to over 90. Among them, 38 were not vaccinated with any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 65 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Among the seven fatalities who had no chronic illnesses or severe diseases, two had gotten three vaccine doses, while five had not had any doses, according to the CECC.

Severe, moderate infections

Also on Saturday, the CECC said that 59 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 106 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Of the 4,184,399 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,404 have been classified as severe infections, and 10,651 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 15.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases on Saturday with 4,350, followed by Taichung with 3,217, and Kaohsiung with 2,662.

Taoyuan reported 2,661 cases, Taipei 2,358, Tainan 1,906, Changhua County 1,249, Pingtung County 893, Miaoli County 711, Yunlin County 708, Hsinchu County 658, Yilan County 627, and Chiayi County 508.

Hsinchu City recorded 499 cases, Nantou County 453, Hualien County 425, Keelung 400, Chiayi City 317, Taitung County 300, Kinmen County 168, Penghu County 157, and Matsu Islands 24.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,240,466 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,224,222 domestic infections.

With the 72 deaths reported Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country has risen to 8,103.
