CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 26,382 new COVID-19 cases, 16 deaths

Taiwan on Tuesday reported 26,382 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and three were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 9 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 19 as moderate.

Of the 5,020,210 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,243 have been classified as severe infections and 12,804 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 22.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Tuesday, with 5,258, followed by Taipei with 3,189 and Taichung with 3,038.

Taoyuan had 2,673 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,179, Tainan 1,650, Changhua 1,132, Miaoli 762, Hsinchu County 711, Pingtung 692, Yunlin 666, and Hsinchu City 659

Yilan reported 647 cases, Hualien 503, Nantou 464, Chiayi County 439, Keelung 424, Taitung 319, Chiayi City 307, Kinmen 199, Penghu 161, and the Matsu Islands 23, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,086,521 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,060,874 domestic infections.

With the 16 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,673.
