CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 34,274 new COVID-19 cases, 46 deaths

Taiwan reported 34,274 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, including 32 imported cases, and 46 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deaths reported Tuesday consisted of individuals who ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All had underlying health issues, while 21 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The 34,274 cases were 12.5 percent lower than last Tuesday, the CECC said. Case numbers are often compared on a week-by-week basis because they tend to be lower on weekends and Mondays than on other days of the week.

Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 36 new cases classified as severe and 35 as moderate.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 infections, with 5,660, while Taichung had 4,731, Kaohsiung 4,285, Tainan 3,365, Taipei 3,036, and Taoyuan 3,017, according to the CECC.

Changhua County reported 1,970 cases, Pingtung County 1,179, Yunlin County 1,008, Hsinchu County 761, Nantou County 745, Miaoli County 733, Chiayi County 724, and Hsinchu City 717. Yilan County reported 573 cases, Chiayi City 465, Hualien County 399, Keelung 361, Taitung County 282, Kinmen County 119, Penghu County 101, and the Matsu islands 11, according to CECC data.

Taiwan has recorded 7,746,969 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, including 36,420 classified as imported, and 12,876 deaths from the disease.
