Taiwan’s single-day COVID-19 cases exceeded 40,000 for the third consecutive day on Monday, with 40,304 new cases and 12 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases consisted of 40,263 domestically transmitted infections and 41 cases that were contracted abroad, the CECC said at their daily press conference.
The number of domestic cases has fallen slightly in the past few days, from 46,377 on Saturday and 44,294 on Sunday, which Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) attributed to fewer people getting tested over the weekend, including on Mother’s Day on Sunday.
The 12 deaths reported Monday involved individuals in their 50s to their 90s. Three had been unvaccinated, two had gotten one vaccine dose, five had received two doses, and two had three doses.
The CECC also reported that 52 patients had developed moderate symptoms and 19 had developed severe symptoms.
Of the 330,742 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to May 8, 658 have been classified as moderate infections and 119 as severe, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.04 percent of the total, respectively.
All other cases have been individuals with only mild symptoms or who were asymptomatic, according to the CECC.
Of Monday’s domestic cases, New Taipei reported the highest number, with 14,179 cases, followed by Taipei with 7,057, and Taoyuan with 6,358.
Taichung reported 2,099 cases, Kaohsiung 1,910, Keelung 1,480, Tainan 1,448, Yilan County 992, Pingtung County 773, Hualien County 767, Hsinchu County 758, Changhua County 497, and Yunlin County 370.
Miaoli County recorded 340 cases, Hsinchu City 336, Taitung County 276, Nantou County 197, Chiayi County 180, Chiayi City 131, Penghu County 89, Kinmen County 17, and Matsu Islands nine.
Meanwhile, of the 41 new imported cases, 21 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed 397,504 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 385,536 domestically transmitted infections.
With 12 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country reached 931. Of these, 78 have been recorded this year.
