Rome: The Czech government envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine has emphasized that the collaboration between Czechia and Taiwan in supporting Ukraine amidst Russian aggression serves as a global “model” of democratic solidarity.
According to Focus Taiwan, the envoy underscored the significance of bilateral cooperation in drone technology, which could play a crucial role in defending against authoritarian threats from Russia and China. Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, the envoy stated that the Czech-Taiwan partnership in Ukraine exemplifies high-impact aid provided by democracies in war-torn areas and is “a role model for the whole world.”
The envoy’s remarks echoed those of Czech President Petr Pavel, who praised joint projects with Taiwan aimed at assisting Ukraine. These projects include a water treatment facility serving about 380,000 people and a cogeneration system providing electricity and heating to roughly 100,000 in Ukraine.
Data from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, Taiwan and the Czech Republic have signed three cooperation deals. These agreements focus on providing water and power facilities and enhancing Ukraine’s healthcare services. The Czech government has been guiding Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private-sector actors working in Ukraine, while also considering extending collaboration beyond humanitarian aid.
Looking ahead, the envoy highlighted drone technology as a key area of focus, noting its extensive use by both Ukraine and Russia during the conflict. Czech and Taiwanese companies have collaborated on drone development for several years, and the envoy suggested that both sides could “take lessons” from the Ukraine battlefield.
The envoy noted that Ukraine has limited the Russian navy’s access to the Black Sea through drone and missile attacks, enabling it to continue global trade. The Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome brought together government leaders, parliamentarians, and private-sector representatives to discuss Ukraine’s recovery and long-term reconstruction.
