Drunken brawl leads to arrest of migrant workers with expired visas

Seven Vietnamese migrant workers with expired visas were arrested on Monday after getting into a drunken scuffle in public, the Taipei City Police Department said Tuesday.

At a press conference, Kao Chuan-en (???), head of the department’s Daan Precinct, said that the precinct received an emergency call at 3:30 a.m. Monday, reporting a fight which had broken out between Vietnamese migrant workers on Linjiang Street.

While the group had already dispersed by the time officers arrived on the scene, the police were able to track down two individuals, both identified with the same last name Nguyen, Kao said.

According to the city police precinct, the two migrant workers were allegedly attacked by five of their fellow countrymen after they got into an argument while having dinner and drinking alcohol at a street stand.

Although surveillance cameras showed that the five migrant workers had run away in three different directions, they were eventually located by the police hiding in a five-story building on Jilin Road, Kao said.

Police then entered the building at around 10 a.m. on Monday and arrested the five workers while they were still obviously impaired under the influence of alcohol, Kao said.

As all seven migrant workers involved in the case were found to have overstayed their visas, they were referred to prosecutors for investigation for alleged affray and violation of immigration laws.
