Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei Resigns Citing Health Concerns

Taipei: Premier Cho Jung-tai has approved the resignation of Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei, Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee announced on Friday. Kuo has stepped down from his position after 15 months in the role, citing health reasons.

According to Focus Taiwan, Cho expressed gratitude for Kuo’s contributions in shaping forward-looking policies for Taiwan’s industries. The Premier hopes that Kuo will continue to collaborate with the government in advancing Taiwan’s economic development even after his departure. Kuo confirmed his resignation earlier on Friday through a statement sent to reporters, highlighting the toll the position had taken on his personal health.

At 72, Kuo thanked President Lai Ching-te for entrusting him with the role, allowing him to serve Taiwan in a different capacity. Kuo, who co-founded the high-tech firm Topco Scientific Co., expressed gratitude to the people for their insights and criticisms, and to the Ministry of Economic Affairs staff for enduring the pressure while implementing key energy policies and advancing artificial intelligence adoption among small- and medium-sized enterprises.

In his statement, Kuo acknowledged the support from the ministry staff, emphasizing that their dedication was crucial to achieving the current outcomes. He mentioned that his health prompted him to recognize the need to pass on the responsibilities to someone who can commit fully to the role, stating it was a responsible decision for the country and his team.

Kuo encouraged continued support for the reforms outlined by President Lai, acknowledging their potential challenges but emphasizing their importance for Taiwan’s future.
