Chiayi city: The Ministry of Education’s preliminary estimates indicate that typhoon damage to educational facilities across Taiwan has reached approximately NT$260 million (US$8.93 million) as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, as reported by Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao on Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Cheng addressed the media prior to a national education meeting in Chiayi City, stating that the ministry’s K-12 Education Administration has activated emergency response mechanisms and allocated funds to the regions most severely impacted by the typhoon. Tainan and Chiayi County each received NT$4.5 million, Chiayi City was allocated NT$1.8 million, and Changhua County received NT$3 million. Cheng assured that he would communicate any additional funding requests from other municipalities to the Executive Yuan, with the hope of resuming school operations promptly.
Chiayi City Mayor Huang Ming-hui emphasized the need for further action, highlighting that 31 schools in the city suffered damage, with repair costs estimated at NT$35 million. The city government is actively working to restore power in affected areas to ensure the smooth conduct of national examinations. The Qualifying Examination for Senior Examinations and Qualifying Examinations for Junior Examinations, initially set for July 6-8, have been rescheduled to July 8-10 due to the typhoon.
Huang called for collaboration between central and local governments to effectively address the issue. Typhoon Danas made landfall in Budai Township, Chiayi County, late Sunday, resulting in two fatalities and 502 injuries before weakening into a tropical storm by early Monday. By Monday evening, the storm had moved north of Taiwan.
