EU investment forum to feature top EC trade official

The head of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Trade will be the keynote speaker at the 2021 European Union Investment Forum to be held virtually on Oct. 14, the EU’s top representative to Taiwan said Wednesday.

The annual forum, first launched in 2020, will include remarks by President Tsai Ing-wen (???), Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (???), and Economic Affairs Minister Wang Mei-hua (???), said Filip Grzegorzewski, head of the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO).

The director general of the EC’s Directorate General of Trade, Sabine Weyand, will deliver a keynote address on “Investing in the EU,” to get Taiwanese companies interested in investing in the world’s largest single market, Grzegorzewski said.

EC officials involved in economic, financial, and climate action policy will also present the EU policies planned and possible investment opportunities over the next decade as part of the European 750 billion euro recovery fund, he said.

According to the EETO head, last year’s inaugural event had a positive outcome, helping boost Taiwanese investment in the EU, which rose 122 percent in 2020.

The EU, meanwhile, remains Taiwan’s largest foreign investor, with 38.8 percent of Taiwan’s inward foreign direct investment in 2020 coming from European Union countries, he said.

With the changing of geopolitics and due to the pandemic, the EETO chief said he anticipated more Taiwanese companies to set foot in EU to benefit from the largest single market in the world.
