Ex-President Ma Asserts Cross-Strait Exchanges Cannot Be Halted by Political Forces

Xiamen: Former Republic of China (Taiwan) President Ma Ying-jeou attended the 17th Straits Forum in Xiamen, Fujian Province, asserting that “no political force” can halt cross-strait exchanges. Ma, leading a delegation from his Ma Ying-jeou Foundation from June 14-27, emphasized that continuous people-to-people interactions are essential to reducing misunderstandings and hostility.

According to Focus Taiwan, Ma highlighted the deep connections between Taiwan and China in language, customs, and human sentiment, stating that these ties demonstrate the inseparable bond across the Strait. He stressed that no political force can suppress sincere exchanges or block the natural feelings shared by people on both sides who share common roots and origins.

Ma stated this visit marks his fourth trip to mainland China and his first to Xiamen, underscoring the proximity to Taiwan’s Kinmen County. He pointed out that Kinmen and Xiamen are symbolic of cross-strait exchanges and peace, highlighting existing tourism and trade links.

Before the forum, Ma met with Wang Huning, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee and chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), an organization aligned with Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.

Later, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) expressed “deep regret” over Ma’s meetings with Chinese officials. The MAC criticized the Straits Forum as part of Beijing’s united front strategy against Taiwan, urging participants to protect Taiwan’s sovereignty and interests.
