Taipei: A total of 500 kilograms of Taiwan's famous Irwin mangoes will be air-shipped to the United Kingdom on Sunday, marking the first such shipment of the popular fruit. According to the Tainan City government, this initiative aims to expand the reach of the sweet and juicy mangoes, which are primarily consumed within Taiwan and have traditionally been exported to nearby Asian markets. According to Focus Taiwan, the Tainanese Irwin mangoes will be the first batch of Taiwanese mangoes to be shipped to the U.K. This long-distance transport of the fragile fruit requires special handling; hence, the mangoes will be sent using cold packaging to maintain their freshness throughout the journey. The shipment will begin in Tainan and make its way to Taoyuan International Airport, from where it will be flown to Frankfurt Airport in Germany before reaching Manchester Airport in northern England. The city's Agriculture Bureau informed CNA that the shipment totals 500 kg, with each carton weighing 5 kg. The mangoes are set to enter a variety of market segments in the U.K. High-end supermarkets will offer cartons containing eight to 10 mangoes, with each fruit priced between 18-20 euros. Retail supermarkets will offer cartons with 10 to 12 mangoes, priced at 15-18 euros each. Whole cartons will also be available to wholesale supermarkets and fruit and vegetable wholesale markets. The marketing strategy for Tainan mangoes will leverage a multi-sales approach, targeting wholesale produce markets and Asian markets in the U.K. This effort is part of a broader strategy to introduce Taiwanese produce to new international markets. In 2025, Taiwan's total mango production was 102,578 tons, with 836 tons exported globally. Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea were among the primary destinations, importing 463 tons, 208 tons, and 140 tons, respectively. Besides the U.K., Taiwanese Irwin mangoes have also found a favorable reception in France. As Taiwan continues to explore new markets, the export of its mangoes to these countries signals a growing international interest in its agricultural produce.
