Foul play ruled out in PFP lawmaker’s death

The Shilin Prosecutors Office on Tuesday said they had no reason to suspect foul play in the death of former People First Party (PFP) Legislator Hwang Yih-jiau (黃義交).

However, prosecutors did not say whether Hwang had taken his own life.

The former PFP legislator was found by paramedics without vital signs around 5:11 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that a man had fallen from the 11th floor of an apartment building on Wende Road in Taipei’s Neihu District.

He was pronounced dead later the same day by staff at the Tri-Service General Hospital after efforts to resuscitate him failed. He was 69 years old.

Those who knew Hwang expressed condolences to his family, including PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜), who said he was deeply shocked to learn of Hwang’s passing.

Prior to becoming a lawmaker from 1999 to 2012, Hwang was a spokesman for the now-defunct Taiwan Provincial Government.

He also held positions with the Government Information Office (GIO), a Cabinet-level agency of the Executive Yuan in charge of promoting government policies and regulating domestic media dissolved in 2012.
