San francisco: The San Francisco Giants have announced the demotion of Teng Kai-wei, the only Taiwanese pitcher to make an appearance in a major league baseball game in 2025, to their Triple-A affiliate following four outings. Teng was sent down alongside outfielder Grant McCray, while outfielder Luis Matos and right-hander Joel Peguero were promoted from the Sacramento River Cats. According to Focus Taiwan, the decision came shortly after Teng's latest start against the San Diego Padres, where he suffered a loss after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, over 3 1/3 innings. Throughout his four games, the 26-year-old pitcher amassed a record of 1-3, surrendering 15 runs, 13 of them earned, across 13 1/3 innings, culminating in an 8.78 ERA. Teng's stint in the majors did, however, feature a notable highlight. On August 8, he delivered five scoreless innings in relief against the Washington Nationals, securing the first victory by a Taiwanese pitcher in the big leagues in over 2,150 days. This marke d a significant achievement in his career. First called up to the Giants in 2024, Teng made four appearances as a long reliever, pitching 11 innings, during which he allowed 12 earned runs, including two home runs and eight walks, resulting in a 9.82 ERA. Advanced metrics indicate some improvement this year over 2024, as opponents' batting average dropped from .326 to .269, their slugging percentage decreased from .500 to .385, and their hard-hit rate dramatically fell from 51.3 percent to 22 percent. Despite these improvements, Teng has continued to struggle with control, issuing nine walks and hitting three batters, including two in his last game. There is still a possibility of Teng being called up again this season, especially given the Giants' current standing. They are fourth in the National League West with a record of 61-67, 12 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (73-55) and 6.5 games behind the New York Mets (67-60) for the NL's final wild-card spot.
