GS Caltex Corp., South Korea's second-biggest refiner by sales, said Thursday it has exported sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to a Japanese trading company. Last week, GS Caltex supplied 5,000 kiloliters of SAF to Itochu Corp., which has delivered the environment-friendly fuel to Narita International Airport, the company said in a statement. The Narita airport plans to sell the less-emitting CORSIA eligible fuel (CEF) to local carriers, such as All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, it said. CORSIA stands for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) introduced CORSIA in order for aircraft operators to monitor their greenhouse gas emissions and offset excess emissions arising from aviation activity. In the European Union, airlines are required to mix at least 2 percent of SAF into traditional fuel oil, starting in 2025, with the ratio set to rise to 6 percent by 2030, 20 percent by 2035 and 70 percent by 2050, the statemen t said. In August, the Seoul government announced it will make it obligatory for domestic carriers to begin adding around 1 percent of SAF to their fuel oil in 2027 Source: Yonhap News Agency
