Heavy rain forecast for northern, eastern Taiwan Sunday

Potentially heavy rain is forecast for northern and eastern Taiwan on Sunday due to strengthening northeasterly winds and the peripheral effects of Tropical Storm Nalgae, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Areas above Taoyuan in the north and on the east coast will see scattered showers on Sunday, while the northeast, Hualien and mountainous areas in Greater Taipei could see heavy to extremely heavy rain, according to the CWB.

Temperature wise, daytime highs on Sunday will remain around 23-24 degrees Celsius amid damp weather in the north and northeast, with highs in other regions ranging from 26-31 degrees, the weather bureau said.

On Sunday evening, a combination of strengthening northeasterly winds and airflow from Tropical Storm Nalgae, known as “accompanied effect,” will bring rain to additional regions, including mountainous parts of central Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula in the south, the CWB said.

As of 2 a.m. Sunday, Nalgae was about 730 kilometers south of Taiwan’s southernmost tip Eluanbi, and was moving westward across the Philippines toward the South China Sea, CWB data showed.

Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said current weather patterns will remain in place through Wednesday, with the heaviest rainfall expected in northern and eastern Taiwan.

From Thursday to Saturday, the northern and eastern regions will continue to experience scattered and locally heavy rain showers, while central and southern Taiwan will see cloudy to sunny skies, with a chance of sporadic rain, Wu said.
