Heavy rain warnings issued for southern Taiwan

Kaohsiung, June 28 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued rain alerts for southern Taiwan, warning of heavy to extremely rain brought by lingering southeasterly winds.

Extremely heavy rain can be expected in Kaohsiung, the CWB said, indicating 200 millimeters of rainfall over a 24-hour period or 100 millimeters in 3 hours.

In Tainan and Pingtung, heavy rainfall of over 80 millimeters in 24 hours or more than 40 millimeters in one hour can be expected, the CWB warned.

The alerts were issued at 5:50 p.m. Monday.

The weather bureau also warned of possible thunderstorms, mudslides, rockfalls and flooding in the area, particularly in mountainous areas.

CWB forecaster Kuan Hsin-ping (官欣平) said the unstable weather is forecast to last until Wednesday before subsiding Thursday due to the strengthening of a Pacific high-pressure front.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, Kaohsiung’s Zhiguan District had accumulated some 160 millimeters of rainfall in the previous 17 hours, while several other regions in Tainan and Pingtung also saw roughly 112 mm of rain over the same period.

According to Kuan, the hot weather is expected to return to the region beginning Saturday.
