Essen: Taiwan table tennis player Huang Yu-jie lost in the final of the women's singles event at the 2025 World University Games in Germany on Thursday. Huang was defeated 4-0 in straight sets by China's Zhao Shang, with scores of 11-8, 11-9, 13-11, 11-5, in the final held in Essen.
According to Focus Taiwan, despite the loss, Huang tied the team's best-ever result in the category, a record set by Taiwanese female ace Cheng I-ching in 2017 in Taipei. Cheng is currently ranked 13th in the world, as per the ITTF website.
In 2009, another Taiwanese player, Huang Yi-hua, earned a bronze medal in the event in Belgrade, Serbia. The biennial Games are being held in the Rhine-Ruhr region through Sunday. As of press time, Taiwan ranked 11th with a total of 14 medals, including two golds and seven silvers.
