‘Incredible’: Alex Honnold Describes Taipei 101 Climb

Taipei: American climber Alex Honnold described accomplishing his dream of ascending Taipei 101 as "incredible" and a "grand adventure." Honnold spoke to reporters shortly after successfully scaling Taiwan's most iconic skyscraper by hand and without a safety harness.

According to Focus Taiwan, Honnold took just over 90 minutes to complete the highest-ever urban free-solo climb, which attracted global attention and was broadcast live on Netflix. Reflecting on the experience, Honnold shared that the support from the crowds below, who gathered to watch the daring feat, was uplifting. "It's a beautiful city, it's a beautiful day. Everyone's enjoying this experience and so in some ways I think the energy actually kind of bolstered me as well," he expressed.

The climber also mentioned that the view from the top of Taiwan's tallest building offered "a beautiful way to see Taipei." Honnold revealed that he had contemplated climbing Taipei 101 without official permission after first seeing the 508-meter-tall structure 10 years ago. However, he later decided to wait for an opportunity to attempt the climb legally, out of respect for the building and the team that granted him access.

Reflecting on the long-awaited achievement, Honnold said, "So then for the project to come together more than a decade later, I'm like: Oh, it's so great! What an opportunity. It's such a pleasure." When asked about the message he hoped to convey to viewers worldwide, Honnold admitted uncertainty, noting that people often derive personal inspiration to pursue their own challenges and goals from such feats. He added that these experiences can provide "the kick they need" to achieve whatever they aspire to in life.
