Taipei: In a classroom at National Chengchi University (NCCU), students engage in conversations in Indonesian, while others debate Southeast Asian politics, delving into topics from colonial history to women's status. This vibrant academic setting is part of NCCU's Department of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures, which has gained attention for its comprehensive curriculum connecting Taiwanese students with Southeast Asia's diverse cultures and languages. According to Focus Taiwan, the department was established as a bachelor's degree program in 2017 and elevated to a full department in 2024. It offers tracks in Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese, alongside courses in regional history, politics, and culture. Department Chair Le Thi-Nham emphasizes that language is central but not sufficient for a holistic education. Students are encouraged to pursue a second major in fields like diplomacy, law, or business to enhance their competitiveness in the job market. The department's curriculum integrates cultural context into language learning. Indonesian lecturer Farini Anwar highlights the focus on cultural nuance in advanced courses, equipping students to translate between cultures effectively. Graduates typically pursue careers in public service, banking, and businesses operating across Taiwan and Southeast Asia, reflecting growing trade ties with ASEAN nations, which reached US$181.5 billion in 2025. Le views education as a form of "diplomatic soft power," enhancing Taiwan's cultural exchange and understanding with Southeast Asia. This perspective aligns with NCCU graduate Ethan Huang's experience. Initially unfamiliar with Indonesia, Huang now speaks the language fluently and values the connections formed through his studies and experiences in Indonesia, illustrating the transformative potential of the program.
