Taipei: President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday bestowed one of Taiwan's highest honors on Markéta Pekarová Adamová, former president of the Czech Republic's Chamber of Deputies, in recognition of her contributions to deepening bilateral relations. Lai awarded Pekarová Adamová the Order of Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon at the Presidential Office in Taipei. According to Focus Taiwan, the president cited a 160-strong delegation led by Pekarová Adamová that visited Taiwan in 2023, describing the trip as a "milestone" in bilateral ties. He also highlighted her speech at Taiwan's Legislature, in which she said Taiwan and Czechia are "in the same boat." Lai noted that Pekarová Adamová has repeatedly underscored the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region at international events. She also promoted resolutions in support of Taiwan in the Czech parliament and personally facilitated the exhibition of National Palace Museum artifacts in the Czech Republic, Lai added. Drawing on her co untry's history, Pekarová Adamová said the Czech Republic understands the importance of freedom, democracy, and the right of every nation to choose its own future, which is why Taiwan holds a special place in the hearts of the Czech people. "This medal is not only a great personal honor for me; I receive it as a symbol of friendship between Taiwan and the Czech Republic and as a commitment to continue building bridges between our countries, our cultures, and our people," she said. Pekarová Adamová, who is visiting Taiwan from Jan. 19-24, delivered a speech on how democracies can meet challenges posed by authoritarian regimes Tuesday morning. She is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, Mainland Affairs Council officials, former President Tsai Ing-wen, and members of civic groups during her stay.
