Lao Woman Arrested at Nong Khai Border for Alleged Involvement in Cross-Border Scam

Nong Khai:A 28-year-old Lao woman was apprehended by Nong Khai Immigration Police as she attempted to cross the border, following an arrest warrant issued by the Rayong court for her alleged involvement in a cross-border scam. The woman, identified as Mrs. Bounmy Luangsisongkham, claims her identity was stolen and used for fraudulent activities without her knowledge.

According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Bounmy was detained under an arrest warrant, numbered J.440/2567 and dated October 8, 2024, which was issued for aiding and abetting public fraud and online crime. She denied involvement, stating she had previously used her passport to open a mobile phone number in Thailand before departing for South Korea for work. Mrs. Bounmy was en route to a funeral in Nakhon Ratchasima when she was detained.

The arrest was part of a broader initiative led by Police General Samran Nuanma, the National Police Chief, focusing on combating transnational and cybercrime. The operation was overseen by senior officials, including Police Lieutenant General Nophasin Poolsawat and Police Major General Piyaanan Tosakulwong, among others. The task force, led by Police Major General Pairat Pukcharoen, aimed to swiftly apprehend individuals violating the Immigration Act.

The arrest warrant links Mrs. Bounmy to a fraudulent online scheme involving the illegal entry of false information into computer systems, potentially harming the public. Investigators from Pak Nam Prasae Police Station in Rayong Province are handling the case. Mrs. Bounmy maintained her innocence, asserting her documents had been misused without her consent.

Pol. Lt. Col. Thiyaphat Rangsippramanakul, Deputy Superintendent of Nong Khai Immigration Police, disclosed that during initial questioning, Mrs. Bounmy explained she had worked in Chonburi province in 2023 and used her passport to activate a mobile phone service before moving to South Korea in April 2024. After returning to Laos in September 2026, she planned to visit Thailand for a relative's funeral when she was arrested. She claimed ignorance of the criminal activities conducted using her personal documents and was unaware of the arrest warrant against her.
