Birmingham: Lin Chun-yi, at 26 years old, made history by winning the men's singles competition at the 2026 All England Open Badminton Championships. This victory marked the first time a Taiwanese player has claimed that title in the tournament's long-standing history.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lin, currently ranked as the world No. 11, defeated the 12th-ranked Indian player Lakshya Sen with scores of 21-15, 22-20 in a match lasting 57 minutes at the Utilita Arena. Lin's strategic use of clears and drops helped him maintain an advantage, especially after building a 14-9 lead in the first game.
The second game presented challenges for Lin due to unforced errors, leading to an early deficit. Despite trailing at the technical timeout, Lin managed to level the score at 14-14. A key moment was an exhausting 46-shot rally, which tested both players' endurance. Ultimately, Lin reached match point at 20-19 and secured the win by converting his second match point at 21-20.
Lin's victory, which included a prize of US$101,500, extended his unbeaten record against Sen to 5-0 and established him as the first Taiwanese male player to achieve this milestone at the tournament. Previous Taiwanese records in the men's singles event included runner-up positions by Chou Tien-chen in 2020 and Lee Chia-hao in 2025.
This triumph is expected to elevate Lin's world ranking into the top 10 for the first time. Earlier this year, he claimed the India Open title, marking his first championship at a BWF Super 750-level tournament.
Lin's success adds to Taiwan's accomplishments at the All England Open, following a mixed doubles win by Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, and earlier women's singles titles by Tai Tzu-ying in 2017, 2018, and 2020. The All England Open, inaugurated in 1899, is one of the prestigious Super 1000 events recognized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
