Magnitude 4.4 earthquake jolts southeastern Taiwan

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan at 1:43 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the temblor was located about 71.5 kilometers north northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 30.8 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County’s Changbin, Chenggong and Donghe, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Hualien County’s Fuli, Hongye and Jiqi, the bureau said.
