Magnitude 4.9 earthquake hits off northeastern Taiwan

Taipei, June 29 (CNA) A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

No immediate damage or injuries from the quake were reported.

The earthquake was centered 51.3 kilometers southeast of Yilan County Hall and occurred at a depth of 67 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s highest intensity, which gauges its actual effect, was highest in Yilan County and Yilan City, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, according to CWB data.

The quake had an intensity of 2 in Hualien County and Taipei, the data showed.
