Taipei: A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Taiwan at 4:47 p.m. Sunday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The epicenter of the temblor was located at sea, about 45.4 kilometers south of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 5.9 km, as reported by the agency.

According to Focus Taiwan, the earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effects of a temblor, was highest in several townships in Yilan and neighboring Hualien County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale, the CWA said. The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Taipei and New Taipei in the north, and Taichung and Nantou County in central Taiwan, CWA data showed.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
